Vivitrol therapy is administered as part of a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program to help prevent relapse in opiate addiction patients. As an opioid antagonist, Vivitrol works by blocking opioid molecules from attaching to opioid receptors, nullifying the effects of opiate drugs introduced to the body. The drug is used to help patients focus on counseling and holistic well-being following opiate detox. Patients must get clean from opiates before receiving Vivitrol. A dosage of Vivitrol is effective in the body for one month.
